Want to help end world poverty? Advise the Federal
Reserve? Assist with European monetary integration?
Go to law school? Then a degree in economics may be
the right path for you.
Called the “imperialist” of social sciences, economics
is the study of production, distribution and consumption
of scarce resources. The economics curriculum teaches
students to analyze choices such as those made by
public policy makers, business managers and consumers.
Studying economics provides the background for
simplifying complex situations and predicting the
outcomes of decisions.
Through economics you will understand the cause
and effect of decisions – even everyday choices in the
brand of products you buy – helping to clarify your
values and moral code. Studying economics in a liberal
arts environment produces a well-rounded graduate with
excellent career opportunities.
This field has a broad range of applications including
business, public policy, international affairs, financial
services, government, statistics, education and consulting.
Those with an economics undergraduate degree are
positioned well for graduate school, particularly law
school.
Many opportunities exist at CNU for economics
undergraduate majors to enhance their education and
resumes.Students may complete independent studies in
several areas including sports and healthcare
economics, and state funding of higher education.
Economics majors may elect to join the Economics
and Finance Club or compete in the national Fed
Challenge, sponsored by the Federal Reserve. The
Economics Honor Society taps students annually for
membership based on academic performance.
Students may opt to work closely with their
professors on research projects, such as how the
Federal Reserve affects interest rates and GNP in the
U.S. and Canada. They may also travel to Europe with
faculty members to meet with high-ranking European
Union officials and lobbyists.
Members of the economics faculty have excelled
both academically and practically. In addition to providing
excellent classroom instruction and conducting
significant research, some professors have advised
foreign governments, lending a strong international
orientation to the program.
If you are looking for a career with unlimited
possibilities, economics is it. It can be applied to virtually
any discipline from outer space to baseball!
