Barry E. DuVal is President and CEO of Kaufman & Canoles Consulting LLC. Before joining KCC, he served the Commonwealth of Virginia as Virginia's Secretary of Commerce and Trade from January 1998 to December 1, 2001. Prior to his appointment as Secretary, Mr. DuVal served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Hampton Roads Partnership, an economic development partnership consisting of 15 localities, 10 colleges, and 34 corporations in Southeastern Virginia.
As Secretary of Commerce & Trade, Mr. DuVal was responsible for 2,500 employees and oversaw fourteen diverse agencies charged with promoting the Commonwealth's economic and industrial development. Mr. DuVal's public service began in 1988 when he was elected to the City Council of Newport News. He was elected Mayor in 1990 and was re-elected two years later by the largest number of votes ever recorded in the City's history. During his mayoral term, Mr. DuVal faced the challenge of diversifying a defense-base economy. He launched innovative economic development solutions that resulted in retention and expansion of existing hometown industries and the attraction of new international and national firms. Mr. DuVal understands the regulatory and fiscal challenges facing entrepreneurs. From 1983 until 1996, he served as the co-founder and President of DuVal Associates, Inc., a diversified real estate firm.
