Learn to “speak” accounting and you will master the language of business.
“All you need to be successful in
business is common sense and a really good accountant .”
– Macon F. Brock, Jr., Chairman of the Board, Dollar Tree;
2003 Executive-in-Residence |
If you are looking for a career with a high starting
salary and increasing demand, variety of specialties,
huge growth potential and excellent preparation for
graduate school, accounting may be the major for you.
The accounting field is more relevant than ever.
The accounting scandals of the 1990s resulted in
stringent new laws that place accountants at the heart of
protecting investors from fraud and abuse.
With the constantly changing business and political
environments, accounting is an exciting, dynamic field
that requires problem-solving, decision-making and“people” skills. The accounting field is expected to grow
by 10 to 20 percent for the next several years, with the
most desirable jobs going to CPAs.
Since all business decisions are made in terms of
dollars and cents, accounting is influential in business at
the highest levels. Accountants collect, interpret and
report financial information to help executives and
investors make decisions that influence profitability.
Whether you want to work on Wall Street or Main
Street, opportunities abound. In addition to holding
positions in public and private CPA firms, accountants
work in auditing, assurance services, forensic accounting,
consulting, information technology, environmental
accounting, international accounting, and tax and
financial planning. State and federal governments
employ accountants in all agencies, including the FBI,
CIA and IRS.
At The Luter College of Business & Leadership, accounting
students will enjoy small classes, personal attention,
numerous volunteer and internship opportunities,
speakers, an annual banquet and picnic, and an active
Accounting Club.
Accounting majors are in an excellent position to
attend graduate school. The Luter College of Business & Leadership
has agreements in place with the College of William &
Mary, Old Dominion University and Virginia Commonwealth
University to admit Luter College graduates to their
Masters in Accountancy programs. These programs
enable students to meet the 150 semester credit-hour
requirement to sit for the CPA exam.
For a career you can count on, consider accounting!
